The People Behind the Project

The following people contribute to the CLEVER project:


Patrik Soltic (Dr. sc. techn. ETH Zürich, mechanical engineer). Affiliation: Empa Dübendorf, Internal Combustion Engines Laboratory.

Tasks: Project management and coordination, experimental research on steady-state and transient engine test benches, calibration and function development chain.


Olle Sundström (MSc., electrical engineering, Chalmers Univerity of Technology, PhD ETH Zürich).

Tasks: Hybrid powertrain component sizing, potential simulations, powertrain structure, model-based automatic control, real-time implementation. He finished his PhD within the CLEVER Project.


Reto Egli (Dipl.-Ing. ETH Zürich, mechanical engineer). Affiliation: Doctoral student at ETH Zürich (LAV) and Empa Dübendorf.

Tasks: Fluid- and Thermodynamics (0-D, 1-D, 3-D), direct methane injection modeling, engine boost simulations, numerical modeling of exhaust gas treatment systems.


David Mauke (Dipl.-Ing. FH, mechanical engineer). Affiliation: Project engineer at Empa Dübendorf.

Tasks: Setup of experiments, engine modifications, experimantal research on engine test benches.


Simon Tischhauser (Dipl.-Ing. FH, electrical engineer). Affiliation: Project engineer at Empa Dübendorf.


Tasks: Electronics and electrics in the demonstrator vehicle


Prof. Lino Guzzella (Dr. sc. techn. ETH Zürich, mechanical engineer). Affiliation: Professor and head of the Institute for Dynamic Systems and Control, ETH Zürich.

Tasks: Consulting on hybrid powertrain and control problems, doctoral theses supervisor of Olle Sundström.


Chris Onder (Dr. sc. techn. ETH Zürich, mechanical engineer). Affiliation: ETH Zürich IDSC.

Tasks: Consulting on hybrid powertrain and control problems.


Prof. Konstantinos Boulouchos (Dr. sc. tech. ETH Zürich, mechanical engineer). Affiliation: Professor and head of the Aerothermochemistry and Combustion Systems Laboratory, ETH Zürich.

Tasks: Consulting on fluid- and thermodynamics and modeling of chemical processes, doctoral thesis supervisor of Reto Egli.


Christian Bach (mechanical engineer). Affiliation: Head of the Internal Combustion Engines Laboratory, Empa Dübendorf.
